Getting the call

If you've ever been to baseball game when the opposing team is having its way with a particular pitcher, you might have seen the manager walk to the back of the dugout and pick up a phone. If you watch closely, you'll soon see another man pick up a phone, this one in the outfield bullpen, and shortly thereafter, a relief pitcher or two will begin to warm up.

You and I have gotten the call from our general manger - the God of the universe. He has called each one of us into the game so that we can throw pitches for his glory. But how do we know what exactly God has called us to do. My pastor recently shared that a calling in made up of these three things:

1. Spiritual gifting
2. Personal passions
3. Need

Think about the gifts you have, the things you are passionate about and how these things line up with some need in our world. Serve the Lord and be an ambassador for him in this area.

One quick side note here. You're calling, or the thing you are most passionate about, does not have to be your profession, though for some it is. Don't get me wrong, we are all certainly called to live for the Lord in our professions but some people choose to work a particular job because it frees them up to do what they are really "called" to do in their spare time - and that's okay. I think that having a job that provides for one's family, whether passionate about it or not, is a calling in itself. Listen to what 1 Timothy 5:8 says:

"If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and it worse than an unbeliever."
